How Green Is BioDiesel?

Our experience of running HGV's for over 20 years on biodiesel shows in terms of

  • cost

  • ease of use & implementation

  • efficiency & true sustainability

  • NO renewable option compares to R100

The ZEMO Partnership Jan 2024 report calculated total life cycle GHG emission savings for HGV's running on

  • biodiesel savings range from 79-83%

  • electric - savings range only 54-80%

In January 2024 the ZEMO Partnership published Vehicle Life Cycle GHG Emissions Study To Show The Role Of Renewable Fuels In Meeting Net Zero. Key takeaways: Heavy-duty vehicles are at the early stages of the electrification journey. Renewable fuels can help to bridge the gap whilst the zero (tailpipe) emission heavy-duty vehicle market develops. Zemo used their vehicle life cycle GHG emissions tool to model a broad range of vehicle segments, powertrains and fuel/energy pathways to show there are some renewable fuels which show greater life cycle GHG emissions savings than current battery electric vehicles using grid electricity. For example, in heavy-duty vehicles renewable diesel shows life cycle GHG emissions savings in the range of 79-83%, whereas battery electric vehicles using grid electricity show savings in the range of 54-80%.

Biodiesel HGV's emit 4-5% less

A 2019 report by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) compared emissions from various fuel types and drivetrains for long-haul trucks. Their baseline finding was biodiesel HGVs emit 4-5% lower lifecycle GHGs than electric.
